The Little Brown Church of Sunol celebrated its 125th anniversary in true Sunol style Oct. 17 with a revival of the town’s tradition of bed races and chili cook-off. Despite rainy weather, a good-sized crowd turned out to see Boy Scout Troop 912 win both the bed races and the chili cook-off. The scouts had already spent hours helping set up the booths for the event and even slept overnight in a tepee to provide security. So their double win was quite a fitting triumph.
The Sunol Jazz Café won the People’s Choice Award for Chili. You can see the plaque the next time you visit the café for brunch after church. And the owners have added chili to the menu.
The Jazz Café also did well in the bed races, coming in second, followed by Bosco’s Bones and Brew and Washington Hospital Healthcare System. The Little Brown Church team of Mary Conant, Gary Chambers and Malary and Steve Hathcox got its picture in the Contra Costa Times the day after the event.
LBC member Randy Pushea’s companion dog Cheyenne won the 4-H Pet Parade.
Participation by LBC members was outstanding, and we can all congratulate ourselves for putting together a wonderful celebration. And on top of that, we made several hundred dollars over expenses – a figure which will go over $1,000 if enough of us buy souvenir T-shirts for Christmas presents. (Talk to exhausted but delighted organizing committee of Mike Brown, Barbara Egbert, Landy White, Mary Chambers and Mary Conant about how many you want and which sizes.)
